Weisses Schloss Zürich

A testament to splendor on Lake Zurich

The building Weisses Schloss –occupies a majestic position in an exclusive, city-center location right on the waterfront of Lake Zurich and is composed of six construction elements forming numbers 30, 32, 34 and 36 along the General-Guisan-Quai, together with No. 2 on the Genferstrasse and No. 1 on the Tödistrasse. Its imposing architecture reflects the style of the period from 1890-1893, a monument to the revivalist trend paying homage to late historicism with a nod to the neo-Baroque. Characteristic of their day are the pale-toned, richly embellished Savonnières limestone façades, and the rooftop silhouettes with their corner turrets and lavishly decorated barrel vaulting. The historic references in the architectural language of the building bestow this paradigm of splendor with an almost surreal, palatial aura – hence its moniker, “Weisses Schloss” the white castle.

The building is a heritage-listed monument with protected status and a unique identity whose name alone is common knowledge in Zurich. Weisses Schloss is currently undergoing a painstaking renovation process preserving its distinctive attributes and restoring its iconic, light façade. As a consequence, the property will once again radiate in its former glory and feature even more prominently as a city landmark.

From 2023 there will be 13 residential apartments to let ranging from 2.5 to 6.5 rooms in size, in addition to 21 commercial units, comprising 4,500 sqm of floor space in total. The end result will be a living and working experience of peerless exclusivity that will be unrivalled in terms of location and standard of finish.

Overview

Bridging past and present

Weisses Schloss makes history real and palpable. The impressive architectural vocabulary of the exteriors is echoed in the interior arrangement of the building, with emphatically authentic entrance halls and staircases resplendent with exquisite materials including terrazzo, marble, and natural stone tiling, magnificent stucco plaster and paintwork, all illuminated by opulent chandeliers lustrous with opal glass and burnished brass – this is a place where you can step back in time to a long-forgotten, altogether grander era.

The 13 residential apartments and 21 commercial units are being renovated and restored to an high standard in the authentic style of the period under the watchful eye of the heritage department, while introducing a number of modern elements. These always reference the historic structure, yet assert their own contemporary status as legitimate complements at the same time. The architects have essentially envisaged a concept that retains the poetic phraseology of Weisses Schloss in all its originality and reiterates it – thereby creating an unparalleled living and working ambience that delicately balances the past and the present.
